Miss Grays Harbor for Dummies

The famous words are " there she is... Miss America"... that's not exactly how it goes when you become Miss Grays Harbor, let me tell ya. But you might be surprised at how close our title holder really is to being the Miss America, or at least on a good day, just feeling like her. A long time ago, I realized that many people in our community don't really know what it means to be a Miss Grays Harbor title holder. They aren't sure who she is, what she does, or even why she exists. I am here to break it down for you, or at least give you my inside interpretation and a sort of guide book that I may have wanted a few years back. This is "Miss Grays Harbor For Dummies."

In the 2012 local competition we have six, yes, six competitors on the local level. Meaning, the MAO, i.e. Miss America Organization, is a grass roots kind of gig (state and national are a whole other bag of monkeys).

The Miss Grays Harbor Organization will be doling out a total of $6,000 in scholarship at tonight's event with the theme "female empowerment." Our local ladies this year are: Meghan Anderson, Claire Brunke, Jessy Finlayson, Melissa Hornback, Shaylene Kelley, and Lacey Tacket, none of whom I have had the pleasure of meeting, sadly, but all good gals my sources tell me.

These women will compete in several phases of competition to win the Miss Grays Harbor title:
Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit - 15%,
Evening Wear - 20%,
Talent - 35%,
On-Stage Question – 5%
Private Interview - 25%

It's all well and good to spell it out like that, and you may even think you see how a queen is chosen, but as my dad would say, "what the hell does anyone care about all that for?"

My dad was schooled for over 20 years in all this stuff (and all of you are getting off pretty easy by reading, or pretending to peruse this article).

Why does the MAO put clout in certain areas verses others? We'll see as we begin to break it down. Or we may become way more confused.

"Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit" means nothing of what it says. It's just Fitness in Swimsuit. Lifestyle... that makes me laugh. What exactly is your "lifestyle" in swimsuit? Ok, I get what they are trying to say... fitness is a lifestyle... or it should be, but... I was fortunate enough to win swimsuit three times in my career and, in my opinion, only once was it because of the fitness...so I am guessing the other times I won because of the "lifestyle?"

Evening Wear. It is, after all, a pageant. Although, I can tell you that during my year wearing a gown wasn't as high a priority as fending off an overzealous circus clown at Logger's Playday. That, my friends, is a priority.

Talent is really where we start to see the meat and potatoes of the program and it's worth the largest percentage of your overall score. I don't just say this because I, myself make my living as a performer. Miss Grays Harbor will be asked to perform her talent on many occasions. Now we can do this the easy way or the hard way. I'd say the easy way is a vocalist. You may think I say this, again, because I happen to be one. However, indulge me. I'll make my point. It gets a bit trickier when you dance or play piano because floors can be slippery or your piano out of tune, but just imagine this:

You are at a fundraiser for a children's food pantry. The title holder enters the room, and of course you are taken with her because she is beautiful and smiling. She may even be wearing her crown.

Ooh, shiny.

Then you notice she is wearing some sort of costume and carrying a big...stick.

"What does she plan to do?" Ahh, you soon realize she is a baton twirler. God save the queen! And let's hope for the absence of fire. She proceeds to throw her batons and hit people in the crowd, there are gasps and shudders that no one is going to forget until tomorrow way after lunch sometime. You think, perhaps I am making this up or that I have a beef with a baton twirler. Quite the contrary, my mother was a baton twirler (a very good one.. who used fire) but my point here is that not every "talent" can be done everywhere the titleholder is doing her job, which of course, is being a spokesperson and goodwill ambassador. It can in actually impede the process. Choose wisely.

Your ability to speak is key. I know this because there were more than a few times when I found this point hit home. Being able to speak in front of a crowd is such a wonderful skill to acquire early in life because you find more often than not that you will need it in the future. Now, we can't all be Miss Teen South Carolina, and gain national recognition for our blunders, but in a small town no one forgets. This is actually one of the skills that most girls are thankful that they learned through this program.

On Stage Question ties in with what most believe, as the most influential portion of the competition: Interview. This can be a horror show for some and an incredibly enlightening experience for others. And unless you have the lucky fortune to be a stay-at-home mom/dad you will have an interview in your lifetime. Now that I think about it, maybe you're not as lucky as I thought stay at home parents. I haven't met a parent yet that say their child at one time or another isn't constantly judging them. So possibly, it's just a long drawn out interview that you are unprepared for. I digress. Title holders are always speaking with people, in every scenario. Formal or informal settings, it can run the gamut. So, when you put your beans in a basket, this is the one to throw them in.

And after all of this do we really know what Miss Grays Harbor does or who she is? I have told you some funny stories and made quips about things I have seen or heard, but no one can ever really tell you what a Miss Grays Harbor is, except for your Miss Grays Harbor. She is never really defined except for the people she serves. For the men in her life she is the smile that lights up the room... the reason they are missing opening day of hunting season... or the reason they had to iron their good shirt. (I know Grays Harbor men!) For the ladies in their life, she is the reason they are up sewing until 3:30am and searching Staples for poster board (thank God for that raise).

So, ladies, to you I wish the best of luck tonight. On another night, with another set of judges, there could be a very different outcome. Only one will win and I hope that for even a brief time you have your Miss America moment. I know that the experience alone is what matters in retrospect. Someday, if not now, I hope you will come to learn that as well. KDUX's Pat Anderson will tell you "you can't always get what you want, you get what you need." Oh, how true that is.

Friday Five: Where to hide your Chocolate stash

With Valentines Day over and the Chocolate on the Beach Festival just around the corner, I got to thinking;  a chocoholic like myself has many places to stash chocolate in the house.  But am I alone in this endeavor? Are there others out there like myself who hide their sweets from family and friends and maybe even from themselves?

A quick survey of the ladies at work told me that I was not alone (thank goodness, one less thing to worry about before bedtime tonight). Aparently, there are many places to hide "the goods" at home and at work.  Here are some of the best, just to name a few.

1.  Clean laundry and chocolate...don't nessesarily go together.  However when stashing your chocolate a perfect hidy hole might be the pockets of your clean laudry hanging in your closet!  This one was one out of my own personal arsenal.  However, it was pointed out to me that if you have a forgetful mind, this might not be the place to hide squishy yummy treats that when washed will most certainly ruin your favorite winter coat. Also, now having revealed my secret stash I am sure my husband now knows exactly where to look for the Whatchamacalits!

2. In the fridge was a popular runner up, but I did some research on this one.  Chocolate absorbs odor rather readily.  So the next time you bite into that special dark Hershey bar, you might also be tasting last nights meatloaf!  The freezer was also mentioned in this conversation, yet I can only imagine the number of cracked teeth from impatient nibbling on a morsel of chocolate that had not quite defrosted.

3. My favorite answer to the question where do you hide your chocolate stash?  What stash?  I eat it!

4. For those not willing to risk the hazards of late night snacking, and if you really do trust your co-workers, stashing your candy at work seems like a wonderful option.  There are loads of places in our work spaces to hide the yummy goodies.  The desk, for one, preferably in a drawer that locks!  The top cabinet in the break room, or your work locker.  The list is endless and the chocolate cannot taunt you when you are relaxing on the couch at the end of the day...just when you are in the middle of a stressful meeting or deadline or ... on second thought, maybe having a work stash isn't such a good idea!

5.  Fill in the blank... I really do need your help.  I couldn't come up with a final place to hide your candy stash and am seeking the help of the capable hands of Grays Harbor Residents!  Where do you hide those Cupcakes from The Recipe Box, and your Seattles chocolates from Harbor Drug and Gifts?  Leave a comment on this post and let me know! I am in search of a new spot since I am sure my husband will be wise to the pockets of my coats now;)

Going Once, Going Twice... SOLD to the Grays Harbor History Books

In the market for a pneumatic fork lift? How about a walk-in freezer or a fresh produce display? Or, if you're like me, maybe you've always wanted to make your own Super Market Sweep set up in your basement?

Well you're in luck! Today is auction day at the Swanson's Grocery Store on Simpson Avenue. Starting at 10am you can bid on (and win) pieces of the harbor's historical family-owned grocery store that's been around since 1953. I'm actually really bummed that this grocery store closed because it's only 2 blocks from my house and was the easiest "shop local" stop for my family. Anyone else disappointed to see that family members can't get their act together enough to keep the doors of a harbor staple business open?

Anyhow, it's all beside the point. While the middle Swanson's legacy goes to the history books, the goods can go to you! I browsed through the auction catalog at the James G Murphy Company website and boy, do I wish I was ready to start the cakery I've dreamed about the last couple years! From all the deli & bakery equipment, to the actual store fixtures, it's all here. You really could do supermarket sweep - checkstands (checkstand surfing?), shopping carts, gondola shelving... the possibilities for fun (and injury) are endless! Go get your bidder number, fellow harborites, and I'll see you there!

Hey There, Harborite: Erin Worth

Name/Age:  Erin Worth, 29

Where do you live: Aberdeen ,WA

Profession/Day job: Chef/Owner of Lunch

Loyal to: I bleed blue and gold baby....Bobcat all the way

Best Harbor Moment:  I was sitting in Starbucks with Callie Pratt and Krister Lile talking about the harbor and how we should change it or even if it was worth sticking around.  Suddenly we were talking about what we wanted on the harbor and within two hours I had been talked in to starting my own cafe.  It was the seed that over the course of six months turned in to my place Lunch.  It all started with a simple hypothetical question.

Favorite Coffee Stand: When I was younger I was very loyal to Coffee Cat.  But I have worked at the local Starbucks and now I serve Batdorf and Bronson coffee and Lunch so I just drink my own espresso when I get to work in the morning.

Favorite Local Business:  There are several.  I love Waughs because Trent is there and he keeps me informed about all the latest and greatest Washington Wines, but I'm alway pleasantly surprised when I go in the Country Closet.  The owner has so many cute items along with the season/holiday trend and I can't wait to see what she has for Valentine's Day.

Grunge, Metal or Country: I'm a little Country I have to say.  I was lost when Big D and Bubba left the air but now they are on the Big Foot County on the Harbor and they are the only people I can tolerate in the morning because they play quite a bit of music too.

Beach, Forest or River:  Beach.  I love the beach in the middle of a storm and I love the beach in the summer.  Westport is diverse with many things to see.  You can go to the Jetty and watch the surfers and then go walk the docks and buy fresh seafood right off the boats.  I wish more businesses were open year round but it's a nice afternoon adventure.

Favorite outdoor adventure or day trip:  I love the drive up the Quinault and walking the Big tree loop and then either having lunch in the Roosevelt room at Lake Quinault Lodge or driving over to the coast and having lunch at Ocean Crest or in Seabrook.  It's a nice loop even in the winter with newly paved roads and very little traffic.  When I have people come to town who have never been to the harbor I always do this with them.

Best way to stay dry on rainy days:  Stay at home with a good book and a fire or drive up to Walter Dacon in Shelton and see if there are any new wines and developments and have a chat about small business with Andy.

Define the Harbor in one word: supportive

If you could change one thing about the area, what would it be:  I want to revive downtown.  We all talk about wanting independent stores and a beautiful downtown area that we can be proud of but when we look at our bank statements and in this economy we all flock to the super stores like Walmart for the discount products and best deals.  We watched so many great places close over the years due to the fact that they can not compete with the slashed prices.  It's devastating to see 75% of the down town un-occupied and torn up.

Grays Harbor's best kept secret:  My Place!!! Lunch is growing but I'm still looking for more.  Once the spring hits there will be outdoor seating and homemade gelato.  I'm excited for the future of Lunch and everything it has to offer the public.

Friday Five: Good Fortunes

It sounded like such a good idea at first... a progressive Chinese dinner! Five restaurants in one magical night.

1.

We were off to a good start and this fortune only assured us that we would reach our goal for the evening. Our first stop was the Canton Cafe. Quite the unassuming joint, but oh the decor! The 60's table tops mixed with 30's glass chandeliers and high wood walled booths. It was an amazing combination. The potstickers weren't so bad either.

Actually they were really good. Did you also know that this place is open until midnight? They also have a juke box and if you're lucky, as we were, you may have a drunken couple playing you the hits from Backstreet Boys and Ricky Martin. I'm just going to put that information in my back pocket for some future evening.

2.

... think about it.

PS - Ocean Palace also has great broccoli beef

3.

Don't mind if I do. Most fortune cookies are full of good news, but I always enjoy the extreme ego boost fortunes. These ones keep my vanity at a high level and typically leave me coming back for more... and I'll take some more of this egg flower soup and pork fried rice from Chinese Village too, while you're at it.

... and a beer too, please.

4.

Greenery? What celebration? I spend most of my time sitting at home in front of the television (just kidding! I'm fun! I have friends! Stop judging me). There's nothing like a confusing fortune such as this one.... I hope I get invited to a party. I'll bring a tree.

How about an origami crane instead? Stefanie is working on it.

5.

I see fortunes such as this to be a challenge. Fortunes from the Golden Dragon really put the pressure on! You better have something awesome planned now or else the world might come crashing down around you. You WILL enjoy doing something different this weekend. I know for sure that Chinese food won't be on the list because I have had enough to last me a good while. At least until Monday. Maybe I'll spend the weekend eating tacos.

This is me super full after eating too much Chinese food... and in case you didn't notice, the first fortune was dead wrong because we only made it to 4 restaurants. Take that, fortune cookie!

Music Monday: She's Everything

Music Monday: Valentine's Edition

To be honest, I'm pretty indifferent toward Valentine's Day but people always have so many FEELINGS about this day. And since I consider myself an afficianado of songs that make your stomach kind of twist into a heart shaped knot and squeeze until you feel like lying on the floor in a dark room (I'm a happy person. Really. It's just science), I now present you with my best choices for a depressing Valentine's Day.

RIP Whitney

Friday Five: Famous Beards

Is there anything more comforting than a man with a beard? This weekend, we'll celebrate the birth of one of the country's most famous good-hearted, bearded men which got me thinking - a good beard and a good man seem to go hand in hand. Don't get carried away though. All beards are not created equal. Please refer to this scale:

Let me explain further through a few examples:

1. Lincoln

I'm certain that each of you will celebrate Abe's special day by doing something full of good-will or incredibly studious like reading a cocktail recipe book by the fire and petting cats at PAWS. I believe Lincoln is probably the most widely accepted and respected beard in our nation's history.

2. Conan O'Brien

In 2010, much to the dismay of his fans, Coco ended his short stint as the host of The Tonight Show and on his final show he left his viewers with these words:
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don’t be cynical. I hate cynicism — it’s my least favorite quality and it doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard, and you’re kind, amazing things will happen."

... and he immediately began growing out his beard. I personally believe the beard gave him the power to survive the situation and come out on top. Also, I met him once and I assure you he is a gentleman and a scholar, worthy of such a beard (even though he has since shaved it).

3. Sam Beam

If you haven't noticed from my Music Monday posts, I am a huge folk music fan and therefore I had to throw in at least one folk musician to this list (no easy task, people... there are many bearded men playing guitar out there!). But what could be more soothing than Sam Beam of Iron & Wine softly singing sweet melodies? What, I ask! Nothing. I dare you to watch this and not shed a single tear for this Maryann girl he's singing about.

4. Jesus

How can he not be in this list? The man who turns water into wine, wears sandals all year round and is always hanging out with fishermen and carpenters? Sounds like a Pacific Northwesterner, if you ask me.

5. David the Gnome

There could be nothing less intimidating than a 6 inch tall bearded man in a red pointy hat. David the Gnome was a vegetarian. He was a doctor. He was 399 years old. And he had a lovely and lengthy snowy white beard. Some say it was the beard that gave him telepathic powers, though we may never know.

If you're having trouble making friends these days, try out a beard. Maybe even just a paper one like this.

Stuff to do with your Sweetheart

Take your Honey to Hoquiam Valentine's Day Event on February 10th and 11th at 7:30,would be my first stop on a list of places for Valentine's Day this year.  Not because I am a particular Tom Hanks fan, but because if you stop at any of the participating restaurants and buy dinner for two, (no that does not mean you can go by yourself and order two entrees) or purchase flowers at participating florists, you will most definitely receive two free tickets to Sleepless in Seattle!
and now those participating restaurants...
8th street Ale House, Al’s Hum-Dinger, Casa Mia, Deidra's Deli at Farmers’ Market, El Jalapeno, Golden Dragon, Lana’s Hangar CafĂ©, Los Arcos Mexican Restaurant, The Oriole Restaurant, Welcome Inn Bar & Grill, Flowers By Pollen and Kathy’s House of Roses

If you are into dinner and dancing, celebrating the classic silver screen way might not be up your alley.  However, if you want to step out in style like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers, the Sweet Heart Dinner Dance Auction might just be the ticket.  The Senior class of 2012 parents are raising funds for the graduating class to enjoy a sober grad night party and we can all benefit by dancing the night away at the Aberdeen Elks, Friday February 10th at 7p.m.. Silent auctions, music by Ready or Not... sounds like a fun way to spend the evening! Grays Harbor's Chamber of Commerce has all the details.

If a low key day is more of your thing, then maybe Southshore Massage's Valentine Package would be the perfect way to spend the day.  It is a couples learning package for $100.00 (not too sure what that may include but doesn't is sound very romantic?) The website, here mentions a Swedish massage!

Want to dress up and feel fancy for the evening?
East Grays Harbor Centennial Rotary
Sweet Hearts Ball & Auction
Saturday, February 12, 2011

Westport Winery  is hosting three Romantic Valentine's Dinner where guests select between Sunday, February 12, Monday, February 13, or Tuesday, February 14 at 6:00 p.m, for a four course dinning experience.  Did I mention wine? Delicious hand crafted wine! Reservations are required and dinner must be paid for in advance, but what a way to impress the love of your life!

If dinner is not in the cards, how about going to LUNCH! Bring your own wine and dine at Lunch 6:30-9:30 on Valentines Day features a great menu with live music by Erika Corban.  What a great way to unwind and spend quality time with your sweetheart!
Even though the next razor clam dig is a few days after Valentine's Day, an evening dig on February 18th might just be the belated celebration your hunny would love.  Four beaches were approved! It would be a great way to get out and enjoy the area while catching your own dinner! Details here !

If you just cant decide what to do, remember to get out of the house and explore grays harbor's great restaurants and stores.  They might just have the perfect gift that you never knew you always wanted!

Friday Five: Live Music! Bars Edition

I'd like to start off by apologizing to the editors of Go Go Grays Harbor. They assigned me the task of writing a Friday Five post about the notable animals of Grays Harbor. Asking me to write about animals is like asking a woodpecker to perform a rhinoplasty. It could be done, but it wouldn't be pretty and it wouldn't be neat. However, it would be enlightening- in a "we should NEVER let that happen again" kind of way. So I'm going to write about something I love- watching people get drunk and dance. Let's go!

1. Galway Bay Irish Pub (880 Point Brown Ave. NE. Ocean Shores. 360-289-2300)
Galway Bay has Irish music most weekends. They serve wonderful food and have a great alcohol selection (Guinness anyone?). When it comes to dancing, Galway is the tamest of bars on my list, but the sing-alongs are a hoot. The more you drink, the better they sound.

One Guinness.

Two Guinness.

Three Guinness.

You get the idea.

2. Quinault Beach Resort and Casino (78 State Route 115. Ocean Shores. 360-289-9466)
The casino is the biggest bar on my list. The lounge itself is reasonably sized but since its a casino, you can drink and smoke all over. I have played out here many of times with the Bruce Hughes Band. I have seen the best dancers and the worst dancers while playing in the Ocean Lounge in the casino. Everything from break dancing to ballroom, from the sprinkler to the worm. The folks who can and the folks who THINK they can. I've seen the old guy who asks all the young ladies to dance then looks innocent as he gropes them until the girls stomp off the floor in disgust (don't play dumb ladies- you've watched the guy pull this stunt all night). You know the person who is so drunk their idea of dancing is to hump EVERYTHING? I've seen that person in the lounge. A LOT. Bonus: the security is awesome- so go have fun!

Seen it.

Lived it.

Love it.

3. 8th Street Alehouse (207 8th St. Hoquiam. 360-612-3455.)
From the folks who brought you Galway Bay, its the Alehouse! The 8th St. Alehouse is in a small building. How small? 12 people and the place is hoppin'. 13 people and the place is packed! 40 people?! At that point, the fire marshall has to come over and notify the barkeep the place is over occupancy. But, as soon as the fire marshall walks in the whole place bursts at the seams! They have to rebuild every week. That's how I see it in my head anyway. Okay, maybe I understated the numbers. Its really not that small, but it is the smallest bar on my list. It's great to play at the Alehouse. You always play to a packed house and that feels good. Plus, they have open mic night! Sweet!

I'd like to play another Hanson tune for you.

And they're all in line for the bathroom.

4. Gepettos (126 E. Pioneer Ave. Montesano. 360-249-4445)
Gepetto's is a good place to get Italian food and it has a sweet bar too. Beer and pizza truly is a match made in heaven. Acoustically, its one of the best rooms on the harbor. The dance floor is front and center of the stage, with seating all around. If you get there early enough to get a table, there's not a bad seat in the house. Also a reasonably sized establishment, it fills up quickly which builds band confidence. If the crowd is having a good time, the band is having a good time and vice versa.

Hey Macarena!

5. NW Passage (617 W. Curtis. Aberdeen. 360-532-0161)
Also a good sounding room, the NW Passage has been a live music staple on the harbor for EVER. Seriously, since the beginning of time. I've seen some great dancing here too, but more in the "I can't believe they're dancing like that...in public" category. Some dance to the beat of a different drum. The kind of beat that puts countless shots of alcohol in your bloodstream and inspires you to move in gyrating motion, a la Pee Wee Herman. Not familiar with that beat? It sounds a little like this:

Happy Styx Day!

If I didn't feel like crying right now I would tell you about how I missed out on the pot of gold... but we all try the best we can to carry on!

Hey There, Harborite! Chloe Pinckney

Name/Age: Chloe/28

Where do you live: Aberdeen.

Profession/Day job: Co-owner, Rosevear's Music Center.

Loyal to: Bobcats.

Best Harbor Moment: A couple years ago, Bruce Hughes celebrated 40 years of the Bruce Hughes Band by throwing a huge party at the Aberdeen Eagles. The turnout was amazing (proceeds went to CCAP) and it was great to see all these people get together, make music, dance, laugh and have a good time.

Favorite Coffee Stand: I don't like coffee. Ask me about Chinese food.

Okay...Favorite Chinese Food: I can't pick just one.

Ooookaaaay...List some of your favorite Chinese restaurants: Viet Hoa, Canton, Hong Kong, Ocean Palace, Chinese Village, and Golden Dragon.

Favorite Local Business: Rosevear's Music Center.

Grunge, Metal or Country: Those are my only choices?! And I only get one?!?! Fine. Metal.

Beach, Forest or River: Forest.

Favorite outdoor adventure or day trip: I am not a nature lover (bugs: no thank you). However, over the summer, I was introduced to the joys of logging roads. What better way to enjoy the great outdoors than observing it from inside a vehicle?

Best way to stay dry on rainy days: Stay inside and make music.

Define the Harbor in one word: Green.

If you could change one thing about the area, what would it be: Discover an industry that provides harborites with plenty of jobs with great wages, is environmentally friendly, furthers education, improves quality of life, cures diseases and promotes world peace.

Grays Harbor's best kept secret: Did I mention Chinese food?

This Thursday
