Friday Five: Dig in the Dirt

I became inspired last weekend to go outside!  NOT working so well for this weekend, but it got me thinking about my veggie garden and my herbs that I want to plant this year.  It is tricky with all of our fog and drizzle to have a beautiful and bountiful garden, however the following five plants will get your fingers digging in the dirt and have you eating healthy this summer!

    Please.... plant peas!
Peas are such a universal veggie and they make a tasty snack.  Pasta, salad, or one of the many different dishes you can find here.

The best thing about growing Peas in our soggy, cold Northwest weather?  They hate weather over
85 degrees.  Perfect for our not-so-warm growing season.

Go out on a limb and try the exotic Artichoke
Believe it or not, Artichoke need our cool wet weather to grow and thrive!  Also, they make wonderful dip. Like, seriously wonderful, delicious dip.

    Lettuce, grow lettuce.
This should come as no surprise that lettuces grows best in cool temperatures, but what is so great about lettuce is the many varieties they come in! Seriously, many many varieties. (Arugula, Romaine, Butter, Boston, Little Gems, Mache, Iceberg, Black-seeded Simpson, Butter crunch,  shall I go on;)

Lettuce can be harvested most of the season and leaf lettuce will regrow once the leaves are harvested above two to four inches in length.

Do like the Swiss and grow Swiss Chard
This veggie is much like spinach.  You can saute, dress or soup it and it will be delicious.  Don't overlook it because you haven't tried it.  It can tolerate summer heat and even a bit of frost!

    Care for a Carrot?
Carrots love loose soil and need watering three times a week, which in our wet growing season is not a problem.  Try rainbow varieties and plant them from January all the way to June!

Now this means that we all need to go outside, despite the rain and dig in the dirt! It will mean a yummy eating season if we grow this spring!

Office Links

If downtime at work means that links to funny videos and great vacations circulate through the teller line, then bring on the downtime.  In an effort to make the day go by quickly I thought that I would share the top links that we are all checking out today.
We discovered our mutual love of baby anythings here,
and declared that we all wanted to adopt and baby lion...at least for a minute.
We escaped the crazy dreariness of the rain in Belize
Found something to laugh at here
and in the spirit of recycling found this which just might challenge you to make found objects into art.
By the end of today I am sure I will have more,
but those few should get your morning up and running!

Friday Five: Wine Not Relax with a Glass?

Ah, wine. If I didn't have amazing friends and no one found it odd to have a beverage as a BFF, wine would be my bestie. Like a true friend, she (white wine is obviously female) makes me feel better when I'm down and makes almost any situation go from good to great. While I usually get to enjoy her company in my living room with my cat in my pajamas after my daughter goes to bed, I sometimes like to enjoy her in public. Hey, she deserves to be shown off and besides, I like to think she makes me look classy.

So.... wine don't you get your class on and celebrate Friday in style at one of my favorite harbor wine spots?

1) The Cellar Club - 110 W. Pioneer Avenue, Montesano
Now this place is classy. Descend the unassuming entryway stairs into a complete wine haven. Vineyard decor, low lighting and comfortable furniture create a casual and intimate setting to relax with friends over a glass of wine. And the wine.... ahhhh. Not only is the selection devine here, but it features a hefty amount of Washington vineyards! I like to come here when I want to pretend I'm sophisticated. Sophisticated meaning I want to break out my fancy blouse and heels. Whoa! Blouse? See, I get all sophisticated just thinking about going here.

2) The Westport Winery- 1 South Arbor Road, Aberdeen
Best Winery 2010 by Evening Magazine's Best Northwest Escapes. No wonder! This place is awesome. You can taste wine here, drink wine here, buy wine here, and sign up to have wine shipped to your house here! It's award winning deliciousness themed after all things PNW. I love Float white wine and Shorebird Chardonnay and they have tons of other wines to suit your tastes. And wine cocktails! But wait... there's more! Don't forget to eat something while you're here from the delectable restaurant or bakery. Besides, I think if you eat more, you can drink more. No? Oh.

3) Amore Italian Restaurant- 116 West Heron St, Aberdeen
Mmmm, pasta and wine. There is no better pairing than Italy and wine (it just looks good together- check out the picture!). Amore is a great place to go for a quick date night (everything we do as parents of a 3 year old is programmed into us to be quick), a girls night out or a family dinner. The atmosphere is comfortably classy and I like the wine menu at Amore - it came into town just as I developed my adoration of the drink of the Gods. It features Washington wines, Italian wines and some classic wines for the not-so-adventurous enthusiast. I like to go for a different, yet consistently unpronounceable Italian wine each time I go. Food is another story - I can't pull myself away from ordering the Veal Piccata every time. Delicioso!

4) Sipping Serendipity Wine Shoppe- 849 Pointe Brown Avenue NW, Ocean Shores

What! A wine shoppe on the harbor this adorable that I knew nothing about?! It's true! I just located them online through the magic of Google. Now I must go. How serendipitous that they have Fabulous Friday pourings and here we are talking about wine on a Friday. Or is that just coincidental? Regardless, I say we need to make a trip out for some perusing and tasting. Ooh it says they do wine flights - my favorite way to experience new wines. If you've been here and it's wonderful, let me know.

5) Grocery Outlet- 217 Pacific Avenue, Aberdeen
Let me start off by saying please don't actually drink the wine at Grocery Outlet. Not that I've tried it, but I bet they frown upon it. Seriously though, if you're heading for the couch instead of the bar this evening, they do have a pretty serious wine section and it features some incredible bargains! So, I'll admit it- this is where I buy almost all of my wine. I love spending just $2.99 on a bottle. It means I can buy 3 bottles at least. I think GO might like wine as much as I do; they have an entire portion of their Barganista Blog dedicated to their wine section and you can read it here. Now, they do stock mostly final runs or discontinued wine, so the selection is always changing and isn't consistent at all. But that's the fun in it! Try something new without breaking the bank. Now get to that couch and rewatch last week's Walking Dead!

Seafood and Music, does it get any better?

I am a self proclaimed foodie.. actually a term given to me by one of my college roomates! We were drawing names for presents for Christmas and she was discussing what kind of present would best suit us.. and I am getting way way way off track!  It is this weekend that offers a great opportunity to taste the food of our shores to my hearts content.

The Sixth Annual Razor Clam Festival takes place in the Ocean Shores Convention Center in Downtown Ocean Shores.  Begining at 7 AM, Saturday, March 24, 2012 with the Firemen's Pancake Breakfast and food vendors including many of our beloved harbor restaurants;
Emily's, North Shore Grill, Alec's, Home Port, and Bennett's.
Check out the entire list of vendors here
If that doesn't start your mouth to watering, how about the Clam Chowder Cookoff?
Or the specialty adult drinks at Galway Bay Irish Pub and the Pirate's Cove Pub?

I also mentioned music.. a local favorite for sure! Drumroll please!
Ericka Corban will be the featured performer throughout the day.

On top of the Scrumptious Seafood and the amazing vendors and music, attendees can bid on decorted clam shovels and kids can enjoy Uncle Stinky's Magic show and pony rides.
The Sixth Annual Razor Clam Festival ends at 4 pm.  Admission to the Festival is $3.00 per person, but children 12 years old and under will be admitted free of charge!

Hey There, Harborite: Sal Abruscato

Name/Age: Mr. A a.k.a Sal Abruscato

Where do you live: West Aberdeen

Profession/Day job: Kindergarten Teacher at A.J. West Elementary

Loyal to: (bobcats, grizzlies, whatever)My Family and friends

Best Harbor Moment: Purchasing a little chunk of Western Washington heaven, where my wife and I plan to build our dream home and mini farm.

Favorite Coffee Stand: Consistent Cups, “Hi Sheena”

Favorite Local Business: The Dennis Company The only place where I can get anything I might need in one spot.

Grunge, Metal or Country: Mostly grunge but have been starting to appreciate some country. I also like the timeless hits of Motown and most classic rock

Beach, Forest or River: All three but if I had to pick one I guess river because they flow from the mountains through the forests and to the beach.

Favorite outdoor adventure or day trip: I enjoy the area around Lake Quinault for hiking, canoeing, sight seeing, and a romantic get away too.

Best way to stay dry on rainy days: Good rain gear! If you let the rain stop you from going out then you are missing a lot of prime outdoor time.

Define the Harbor in one word: potential

If you could change one thing about the area, what would it be: I wish people would stop dumping their trash on logging roads and other back country areas. There is nothing worse than walking through the woods and coming upon piles of garbage.

Grays Harbor's best kept secret: That’s for me to know and you to find out for yourself.

Music Monday: Red Hot Chili Peppers- Look Around

I only just recently discovered the awesomeness of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' album, I'm With You. I highly recommend it!

Music Monday - Paul Rodgers

Have you gotten your tickets yet for the amazingly talented Paul Rodgers?! This is going to be one heck of a show!!  If the name doesn't grab you, he's the legendary frontman for the bands Free, Bad Company and The Firm.  If you want MY honest opinion, he's a Rock God and I can't wait for this show!! Especially since he's playing in my hometown. :) He will be live in downtown Aberdeen on Wednesday the 28th playing at the D and R Theater. If you haven't gotten tickets yet, you should do so, NOW... Cause it's All Right Now!

You can buy tickets at Backstage Espresso located at the D and R Theater, or check them out online.    http://www.dandrtheatre.com/

Music Monday: Dan Hartman- Instant Replay

Music Monday: Sufjan Stevens - Lakes of Canada

I've chosen this song today because of they way he freaks out at the beginning of the video because it's too cold. Exactly how I felt today when I walked out the door!

Music Monday: Black Keys- Gold on the Ceiling

im chronically disorganized and sluggish on mondays thus this poorly grammartized post from my phone. but this song is infectious and gets me energized instantly. it also makes me wish i had some gold. i might have to buy one of those goldbar piggy banks at grays general store and pretend.

Music Monday: We are Young

Regardless of how I felt Sunday morning, I think this sums up exactly how I felt Saturday night!
Have a wonderful Monday all...and a wonderful Tonight.

Friday Five: Things that are Better Green

St. Patty's Day is upon us! I'm sure you've got your "Kiss Me I'm Irish" t-shirt sitting on the dresser, ready for tomorrow morning but come on... that's totally been done. Why don't you celebrate with something a little less cliche like one of these things that we think are better green.

1. My bank account

Technically my bank account looks more yellow (since that's the color of their website) but I think you get what I'm trying to say here.

2. Beer

This is ONLY ok on St. Patrick's Day, as far as I'm concerned. And the irony here is that this had to be invented in America. No Irishman with an ounce of integrity would contaminate his delicious brew with artificial food coloring. Not to mention that they probably don't even drink beers that are light enough to be turned green anyway. So grab your Budweiser and mix in some color from the easter egg dying kit and be on your way...

3. State Flags

Green state flags are obviously the best.

4. Your Consumer Habits

Take a few tips from Mr. Environmentally Friendly, Ed Begley Jr., and adopt a green lifestyle! Drive an electric car, only eat food found in your backyard and live in a mud hut. You can even join in the competition between Ed and Bill Nye (the Science Guy) in having the smallest carbon footprint.

5. Pants

Where my hipsters at? Green pants are pretty much the coolest thing to wear these days... take it up a notch and add a green polka dot bow tie or maybe some kind of green feather headdress.

Have fun out there this weekend!

Hey There, Harborite! Jason Lake

Name/Age: Jason Lake age 36

Where do you live: Montesano, WA

Profession/Day job: Employment counselor at WorkSource Grays Harbor

Loyal to: (bobcats, grizzlies, whatever)I was a Grizzly, my kids go to Aberdeen, my fiancée’s go to Montesano and my kids play sports in Montesano so I have strained allegiances.

Best Harbor Moment: I think there are many great moments in Grays Harbor. We’re like Stallone from Rocky 1, not too pretty and we never seem to win the championship but we keep getting knocked down and we pull ourselves back up. We pull together as a community, which we have seen with the 2007 Storm and most recently helping a community member with an aggressive cancer. There’s a lot of negativity in our community but there are major positives to build on once we band together to do so.

Favorite Coffee Stand: Heron Street Coffee Man, hands down. Though, I am pulling for my friends the Whisenhunts to get the Central Park stand off the ground.

Favorite Local Business: WorkSource Grays Harbor-I’m biased, I know, but we really do work hard to help the community of Grays Harbor. We live with the worst unemployment in the state but the jobs are there. We want to help you find them. There are plenty of great businesses in Grays Harbor. The Pasha Group, Imperium Renewables, and the D&R Theater are all very exciting for the jobs, innovation and entertainment they bring to our area. This is what we need to get reinvigorated.

Grunge, Metal or Country: All the above. I am definitely a 90’s rocker with a strong affinity to Grunge and the Northwest Scene but I truly do love most all types of music. The one exception is “new” country. Give me the Outlaws any day but keep your pop with a twang.

Beach, Forest or River: I love the beach but not the really easily assessable ones. I don’t go out by the Shilo very often, more of a remote Ruby Beach type of guy. Though I do love the Rainforest and Quinault.  Favorite outdoor adventure or day trip: Like I said, taking the family to Ruby Beach is my favorite get away in Grays Harbor.

Best way to stay dry on rainy days: I’m a huge movie fan, so either in the theater or on my couch sounds like a great day.

Define the Harbor in one word: potentialful. (you didn’t say it had to be a proper word)

If you could change one thing about the area, what would it be: I would work to bring new industry here. We have serious infrastructure for new opportunities. The Port has been the one bright spot but it has not netted nearly as many jobs as is needed to truly turn us around. I know we have the labor force. With some true innovation with industry and local area partners working in workforce development we could create a new job market and put people back to work in family wage jobs. That is truly my biggest passion: creating opportunities for working folks to provide in a meaningful way. I know we have the potential, it’s just a matter of convincing new jobs to come our way.

Grays Harbor's best kept secret: Its people. The problem is it seems that’s a secret even to the people in this community. If we could create meaningful partnerships in the community to achieve economic and social development I believe this county could achieve a new identity. We have created Nobel Prize winners, goliaths of industry, and artists that have truly changed the landscapes of their forms. Grays Harbor has been great before and we could be again but it would take a real movement, a revolution. Viva la Revolucion!

Run, Harborite, Run!

It's the world's most popular hobby, it was the key to early man's survival and it's the 19th most popular personal goal in the world. When is the last time you went running? And I don't mean from the parking lot to the time clock on days when you're late to work. I mean full on concentrated running or jogging for no other purpose than, well, to stretch your legs and run.

Been awhile? How about never? I'll admit I've only truly gone on a dedicated run a handful of times (4 or 5 tops) and they've all been within the last six months. Before that, never. I loathe a treadmill (the human hamster wheel), and I think I look ridiculous when I run so I keep to other options for my exercise. But last Thanksgiving I wanted a pre-feast workout and the gym was closed so I put my earbuds in, laced up and decided to give it a shot. It was pouring, by the way, and for all my spin-circuit classes I still had no stamina for continuously jogging, but it felt good to just go. I've enjoyed the few times I've gone out since then and I'm considering following a training program to run a 5k later this year.

5k, you say? Why, yes! Turns out there's plenty of organized runs scheduled for 2012 in the Grays Harbor area that you and I could be a part of. I had no idea and I bet you didn't either unless you're already a participating runner. Then good for you, you're one (thousand) steps ahead of me and everyone else.

In fact one of my good frie
nds, Sheena Paniagua, is a seriously dedicated runner (and Harborite) and has participated in many runs locally and regionally. She has been a huge resource for me as I strive to become more fitness oriented and she was kind enough to let me pick her brain for inspiration, tips and tricks on this whole running gig. Here's what she had to say:

Ali: So, I'll be frank right off the bat. Why run?
Sheena: I use running as a way to stay active and to be in good physical and mental shape. What first inspired me to start running was having my daughter and just the simple fact that it was something I've always been terrible at. It was the hardest, best challenge I could think of for myself.

Ali: Wow, that's pretty inspirational! How long have you been running? Any personal goals you're working towards?
Sheena: I've been running steadily for about a year and a half now. I have no specific goals with running right now other than to compete in a minimum of 6 races including one half marathon every year.

Ali: Six races and a half marathon?! I'm excited that I might do one. Any programs that you'd recommend for a beginner like me?
Sheena: I know the YMCA has a running group three days a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays to help locals prepare for the half marathon in Grays Harbor this summer.

Ali: Thanks, I'll check it out! I like the idea of running outdoors - any good routes in Grays Harbor you can recommend?
Sheena: My favorite outdoor place to run in Grays Harbor is along riverside in Hoquiam and run the loop around the bridges.

Ali: And when it rains... any tips for making it bearable?
Sheena: Get some underarmour coldgear to help keep warm and somewhat dry. Other than that, hit the tread mill if it's absolutely terrible out. That way there's no excuses!

Ali: How about tunes- what's your favorite running music?
Sheena: My must-have tunes for running would be Rihanna, Skrillex, Drake and anything else with a faster beat that can keep my running speed steady.

Ali: And an energy drink to keep up the pace, right?
Sheena: Energy drinks are high in sugar, calories and later give you a crash so avoid those! I would recommend at least a daily vitamin and some protein powder as far as supplements go.

Ali: Any final words of advice for me and my fellow beginners?
Sheena: My advice to beginners would be to take it slow and steady. You don't start out running long distances or going for speed, you slowly work into both and every week slowly increasing both until you get to the desired distance, speed, etc. And of course running shoes with good support and tread are important too for your back, joints and posture.

Sheena, posing at her first half-marathon, this last December. That's 13 miles, people!

If you're interested in participating in a local run this year here are a few events already on the calendar:

All the detailed Hoquiam run information is available on their Fun Run website HERE.

That's a ton of options! And most of them are far enough away that there's plenty of time to train. If you'd like to give it a try, Sheena was correct that the YMCA has a training program set up. There is no link on the website to the information, but if you stop in they can provide you with a flyer describing the program times and costs.

If you would like to train on your own or with a friend, try the very popular Couch-To-5K program! A link to the 9-week program, which you follow on your own 3 days a week, is HERE.

I'm excited to branch out into something new and set a goal for myself to accomplish. I look forward to the hard work and training, and the reward of completing what I set out to do. I hope you will join me! I'll probably be the one in the back of the pack so I could use the company.

Music Monday: Yes- Roundabout

Music Monday - Miranda Lambert

I don't believe the weatherman told us that it was going to snow today.... but as soon as the flakes started to fall, I instantly thought of the song, Over You, by Miranda Lambert.  Miranda and her husband, Blake Shelton co-wrote this song.  When Blake was just 14 years old his lost his older brother due to a car crash.  The music video is only a couple weeks old, and it's worth a listen. You'll find this song on Miranda's fourth album, Four The Record. Plus, take notice of the necklace Miranda is wearing. As of today, you can bid on it on ebay! It's being auctioned off for charity, and I'm hearing it includes a piece of lace from the 19th-century.

Music Monday: Everybody Talks- Neon Trees

I'll admit, I hated this song the first 10 times I heard it. Then one day it got stuck in my head on repeat and like a switch getting flipped, I went from hating it to loving it. That's not the first time my musical fondness has done a 180. I'm just hoping the same thing will happen for me and Mondays.

So far, I'm still waiting.

At least there's good music to start the week off right. Tap your monday-boycotting-half-asleep foot to this, fellow Harborites!

Music Monday: Reggie Watts

Ever wonder what non-shameful behaviors take place in the house of a single lady?

Not that I like to reveal everything that goes on behind closed doors, but I recently read an article on yourtango.com that expressed a few behaviors that you should have no shame in doing. The more I read, the more I realized I probably wrote the article myself.  There’s a lot of people out there who I don’t think necessarily fully embrace their alone time.  When the spouse, kids, or whoever it is that occupies space in your home are not there, INDULDGE! Why not??? There’s so much you can do!  Heck, I do them and didn’t even realize the goings on in my home aren’t like they are in others… So I started thinking, “hmmmm, I bet my married with children friends can’t do this….”

So, with that, I’m starting to stop taking my behaviors for granted, OR in shame!  And I completely suggest you taking a little time to yourself, and maybe enjoy a few moments in the life of a single girl. :) Because it IS pretty enjoyable.

At any time, I can eat an entire meal by standing around my kitchen counter, sitting on the couch, or heck, even in bed.  I don’t have to get out the fancy china OR set a table, and if I want, I can be naked. (this may end badly depending on what it is you’re eating, so proceed with caution).  On occasion… I eat right out of the pan I just cooked out of.  Is that bad? Nope. And sometimes I don’t actually feel like cooking. Imagine that… So, skip dinner, go right to desert… It’s the best part anyway.  I encourage those who are so used to routine to try to switch things up the next time they’re ‘alone’.

Hours upon hours can be spent playing video games.  I realize I’m a girl… But I have a weakness for all things Nintendo.  I can also spend quite a bit of time watching ridiculous tv shows and movies on the Netflix… Such brilliance this whole Netflix thing is…. I’m still waiting for them to upload my favorite 90’s tv programming.

Work out by practicing your ninja skills… Sometimes this happens when you aren’t really trying… You’ll hear a noise, and your brain gets the best of you and tells you that some big mammoth dude with a chainsaw is about to enter your bedroom and attack… Instant ninja mode.   – this has happened on more than one occasion; I wake up, and end up standing on top of my bed holding a golf club like a crazy baseball player…. Thankfully, I haven’t had to club anyone.  BUT, I fully believe that those ninja skills will come in handy one day.  And I hope they do for you as well.

I’ve lost the cap to my toothpaste… and weekly I am scooping up paste goo off of my bathroom counter sink.  If I lived with someone else, I would find this to be incredibly gross.  Weird, when it’s YOU doing the ‘wrong’ behaviors, they simply don’t mean as much.  This may or may not go over well in your household.  Pretty sure if you misplace the cap, this would start an argument. (all the more reasons to live alone. Lol) but if you want to spice things up a bit, see what happens when you leave the lid off.

DANCE!  Turn up the music and get down with your bad self.  Hey, I say even sing along!  You’re by yourself, right? No one can see you, or even hear you.  So where is the harm? Unless you have neighbors that like to stare you down through your window.  I guarantee if you REALLY get into it, not only does your mood improve, but you’ll even get more done around the house… This is one of my favorite things to do when the laundry has piled over so much that I no longer have clean socks to wear.   Who am I kidding, this is a weekly event.

How do you enjoy a date night with yourself?   Find out what is on tv… nothing good?  Hit up Redbox… you’ll find these at 7-11’s, and you can rent a movie or a video game for a buck…. Or maybe it’s $1.20 now… Anyway…. Throw on the pajamas… find your snuggie or a forever lazy (don’t tell me you don’t have one of these…. To fully embrace the single lady lifestyle, one of these is a must)… Get yourself a small bowl of cereal, and lounge on the couch while indulging in either a red box movie, or late night infomercials.  And since the bowl is so small, it’s always okay to have another. Do this till you lose track. I mean, it’s just cereal, right? If you’re anything like me, you’ll remember you’re lactose intolerant and just end up with the entire box of Cap’n crunch in your lap.

Ever had a pantless Saturday?  Try being Donald Duck for the day. That guy gets away with being in public sans pants.  I’m jealous.  And I’m also here to tell you that it’s actually quite freeing….Try it… if you hate it, you can hit me… but not hard, I’m fragile.  Feel free to throw in the dancing and ninja skills practicing with this.  And drink a mimosa… Oh, and it should be noted that this isn’t an ‘outdoor’ activity.  I would hate for someone to get an indecent exposure ticket for something I’ve suggested. So, opposite of what the guy says on Reading Rainbow…

But if you need a good laugh, want to blow off some steam, or just want to change things up a bit... I truly suggest trying out any of these shameless activities. THAT you can take my word for... why? Because this is my life. and I love it.

Good morning, sunshine... What the hail?

Is it winter or spring, Mother Nature? The size of the hail that coated the ground (impressive, I must say) and the frigid temperature suggests winter. But the blindingly bright sunshine and clear blue sky say spring. I'm so confused!

Friday Five: Five Reasons To See Humptulips Play at The Quinault Beach Resort and Casino This Weekend

I'll admit I'm abusing blog privledges to plug the band I recently joined. However, I'm not sorry.

1. Red Solo Cup.

Love it or hate it, this is happening in a big way. Buy stock in Red Solo Cup.

2. This guy.

Serious entertainment. Great expressions!

3. Anthropology.
Observe the social interaction between country music fans. Classic rock fans party one way and country music fans party in a different way. The basics are the same: music, alcohol and fun.

4. No cover charge. Say what?!
I said,

How often do you find that these days?!

5. Go out and have fun. Bring some friends, buy some drinks and have a good time. Let us help you celebrate the weekend.
