Toast the Harbor 2012
Having just been to Hoptoberfest at the Quinault Beach Resort and Casino, and having won at the silent auction, I am more than excited that Toast the Harbor will be coming so soon to the same location. With the pairing of wine, food, entertainment, and free gifts, Toast the Harbor should be a one-stop for an evening of fun!
The event takes place on Saturday, November 3rd from 2:00pm-9:00pm with Tickets available at the door, from any Aberdeen Lions Club member or at a number or local business including; Aberdeen Honda, Harbor Drug, GL Kluh, Frames-N-Things, Journey Travel, Quinault Beach Resort, Flying Cats & the Sipping Serendipity Wine Shoppe in Ocean Shores.
Toast the Harbor is an event that has been sponsored by the Aberdeen Lions Club for the past 8 years. As for this blogger, who was not all that familiar with Aberdeen Lions, I did a little research.
This event is and has been their major fundraiser for the past 8 years. Check out their website to see what the organization supports and how they help our local communities. It was an eye-opening read.
This weekends event is certainly a foodies paradise, with samples of cuisine from local Ocean Shores eatery Half Moon Bay, The Orieol in Hoquiam, Northshore Grill, Engs Egg Rolls, and QBR. With vendors from Harbor shoes in Aberdeen, How Charming, and Blissful Wonders there will be plenty of swag to buy and win.
In addition to the food (I know that it is hard to imagine something better that delectibale goodies and savory treats) several wineries and breweries will be giving samples of beer and wine. The 2012 Toast the Harbor wineries and breweries that are participating this year are as follows: the Bateaux Cellars out of Toledo, WA, Frenchman Hills Winery, Okanogan Estates, our very own Westport Winery, Dicks Brewery, Local Westport Brewary, and new local distillers Wishkah River Distillery.

Taste of Home Cooking School
When the Holiday season kicks off, I get the urge to cook. I want to have people over and prepare warm, comfy food that makes your tummy happy. I start breaking out the cookbooks and making shopping lists. Tis' the season to try new foods, and new cooking techniques. Sitting in this spacious theater, participants will be privy to live cooking demonstrations by Culinary Artist Kristi Larson. Each year Taste of Home picks 10 recipies from their fall magazine to showcase at their cooking school demonstrations. Those who attend the school tonihgt will get to see each of these recipies made and take home goody bags with the recipies inside.
Vendors and prizes will be available to peruse and win.

The Fab Four, Loggers Playday and more more more!
With so much going on this weekend we here at GoGo wanted to wrap up the upcoming events into a nice little package and stick a bow on top to make planning your weekend of fun stress free.
Even though we are back to school and there is a tiny chill in the air, it is in fact still summer and there are many summer festivals to be enjoyed this upcoming weekend.
Speaking of festivals, Pacific Beach is soaring things into high gear this weekend with the Up Your Wind Kite Festival. Sponsored by Hi-Flyers kite shop, this kite festival is family friendly and full of fun. Up Your Wind is happening both the 8th and the 9th at the Pacific Beach State Park.
Cosmopolis is also hosting a festival that will once again be hosted at the Cosmopolis Elementary School. The Cosi Festival in the Park has operated out of the school for the past three years due to park closure when the Mill Creek Dam broke. However, the show must go on and so will the festival this year on Sunday the 9th!
Did we mention that it is Logger's Playday weekend? Officially starting with the Rotary Clubs pancake feed and including the Elks Lodge grand parade, Loggers Playday offers something for every history buff in town. The Loggers Playday loggers show is a must see, along with fireworks and booths that will have you working up a logger's sized appetite. Hoquiam hosts Loggers Playday and the festivities begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday the 8th!
If Music is more your thing then you should definitely be in Westport this weekend for the Dock of the Bay Blues Festival. Running from Friday to Sunday the Dock of the Bay Blues Festival is the beaches answer to Loggers Playday. Live music and food and booths to make every music lover smile. Head to Westport this weekend for Blues music and fun.
When you are looking for live entertainment, the D&R Theater never dissapoints. This weekend the D&R is throwing a concert that you must simply see to believe. The Fab Four tribute band that is so much more than a tribute band will be performing on Sunday the 9th. These musicians attention to detail makes this show a can't miss performance. Make sure the D&R Theater is on your list for this weekend. A perfect way to finish off the weekend!
Not to mention Hoquiam's First Thursday on the 6th of this week, the Jack Reynvaan Memorial Run at the Hoquiam track on Saturday the 8th, the Brady Clean Water Oyster feed on Saturday the 8th, the Seabrook Saturday Market on Saturday the 8th, and the AAOS Arts and Crafts festival in Ocean Shores the 7th-9th.
It is a Kite flying, Park festival, Blues playing, Loggers Playday this weekend and you must simply get out and enjoy!

Friday Five: "Laborless" Labor Day Weekend Events
When I think of the word labor all I can picture is toiling away in my yard working on my flowerbeds and sweating profusely while trying to rip out the weeds that seem to be overtaking my yard.
Instead how about a great round-up (really bad pun there, sorry) of events that require no labor at all!
1. The 66th Annual Seafood festival in Westport on Saturday the 1st is a tradition on the harbor for the better part of the last century. If you are into salmon, white fish, shrimp cocktail, oysters, corn on the cob and clam chowder you just have to be in Westport this weekend! Just $15 dollars gets you a full meal.
2. The Kelpers Day Parade in Pacific Beach is an all weekend event that ts also sure to bring a smile to your face. What might Kelper mean you might ask? The parade honors the Shake-rats who have a rich logging tradition in PB and kelp is just kelp. The festival is a great chance to get out and celebrate the history of the area and watch some amazing demonstrations of log tossing!
3. If you are anything like this blogger, you adore the music of Journey. Don't Stop Believing (DSB) at Quinault Beach Resort and Casino this Saturday evening is just the thing to get your Journey fix. While the real band may be contemplating a reunion tour, you can enjoy their heart pounding music performed by DBS and have a few flashbacks of your own!
4. This weekend also marks the 4th Annual Salmon Bake in the Garden (Ocean Shores). Staring at noon you can enjoy delicious roasted salmon at Garden by the Sea on Ocean Shores Boulevard. What a way to enjoy the day on Saturday but with some delicious food and the ocean air.
5. If vehicles screaming around a track and kicking up dust is more your thing, you will not want to miss the big rigs of Rolling Thunder Big Rigs at Grays Harbor Raceway. Saturday night will be the only time Rolling Thunder will be at the raceway in 2012 and is sure to bring a great show. Saturday night $18.00 adult admission for raceway fun.

Cleanwater Classic
Sand. Check
Surf. Check
Wetsuit. Check
Surfboard. Check
It is time for the 11th annual Cleanwater Classic in Westport this weekend!
Even if you have never surfed (me) and have no intention of putting on a wetsuit (me) and jumping into our frigid pacific coast waters (me), just watching this surf competition can conjure up images of summer and warm sun.
Want to volunteer? You can, even if you don't surf. Vollunteers are needed in all sorts of capacities from beach crew to registration, auction monitors to judge spotters.
Friday night the event kicks off with Live Hawaiian music at Half Moon Bay Bar and Grill and ends the evening with a Reggae dance party (you can't make this stuff up).
Want more information? Of course you do! Clean Water Classic has a great website, and registration just started on the fifteenth.
All that is left now is the grab your board, or your camera if you prefer to watch, and head out to Westport this weekend!

Lighthouse Ballet Academy presents Don Quixote
This weekend, you will have the opportunity to see incredibly cute children having a fabulous time dancing to classical music on stage.
(ex. 1: cute child)
Not only will they be having a good time, these children have actually been instructed on various ways to move around so that we, the audience, might find it entertaining (and also probably incredibly cute - just saying).
(ex. 2: children with skills)
The Lighthouse Ballet Academy of Hoquiam will be performing Don Quixote this Friday and Saturday at the Aberdeen High School auditorium. Luis, the Academy's head honcho, ensures me it will be a great show with beautiful costumes and lovely choreography. "After seeing our ballet, you will no longer need to go to Seattle to see a beautiful show," he says. Based on his dance posture, I'm going to trust him.
(ex. 3: professionals)
From what I remember from the episode of Wishbone that I watched when I was in 7th grade, Don Quixote is a pretty cool story and, I'm guessing, a very interesting ballet. I was particularly excited to see these boys with masks on during the rehearsal I dropped in on.
(ex. 4: bearded children)
There certainly are many reasons to check out the show this weekend. To find out more about the story behind the ballet and to get your tickets, check out the Lighthouse Ballet Academy website!

Interview with Roxi Copland: Live Show This Friday
I had the opportunity to ask a few questions of musician, Roxi Copland, who grew up in Aberdeen and is returning to the area this weekend on tour with her latest album.
(photo via Shades of Grays Harbor)
Roxi... is that your real name?
Roxi is a nickname that a friend bestowed on me in high school - I liked it. So I kept it. How did you get started in music?
So, you've been at this for quite a few years. Has your musical taste changed much over the years or have you always been interested in jazz?
You just released your new album, Pretty Lies. Is this your first full length album and how was the experience of creating it?
So, you grew up in Aberdeen, then moved to Iowa and now you're back in the PNW living in Vancouver, BC. Do you miss all the corn fields?
I think we went to elementary school together at McDermoth. Who was your favorite teacher?
Mr. Greeley.
And your favorite recess activity?
Ok. Enough reminiscing... actually, wait... any other favorite memories of your life on the Harbor?
You have a performance at Savory Faire this Friday. What is your favorite part of performing live?
And you're playing some living room shows on the tour. That's pretty cool! What prompted you to do that?
There’s nothing quite like the synergy that comes from an intimate audience in the perfect venue. But unfortunately, as a touring musician, you don’t always know what venue in a new city will have the right kind of vibe or attract a crowd that’s down with my kind of music. House concerts are the perfect solution. They’re win-win for everybody. You get that intimate crowd feel and the host gets a private show for his or her friends. And, bonus: you’re already at the after-party!
Even though you'll only be in town for a day or two, do you have any "can't miss" places or businesses you'll be visiting?
We're excited to have you back! You'll be playing this Friday, May 4th at Savory Faire in Montesano. Should we get tickets ahead of time?
No need for tickets. It’s a free show. Though, Savory Faire is recommending reservations if you want to make sure you get a table.
Check out Roxi Copland at Saivory Faire this Friday, May 4th at 7pm. For more information about Roxi and to buy her new album, head over to her website roxicopland.com.

Grays Harbor Outdoor Adventure and Travel Expo
This weekend is the second annual Outdoor Adventure Expo.
Crew members from the deadliest catch.
Prizes and fun for the family.
Grays Harbor County Fair Grounds.
Eva Shockey of “Jim Shockey Hunting Adventures”.
Glen Hall of the fishing and hunting show “Hawg Quest".
Expo tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for youths 6 -13, children 5 and under free.
Hours: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday and
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Children are welcome to cast for prizes at Cabela’s Fishing Pond.
Having lived on the Harbor for most of my life, it is hard to convey to people who are not from our beautiful area just how important the surrounding wildlife is to our outdoor experiences.
I would even go as far as to say that most of us either are a hunter/fisher-person, or know someone who is, which usually translates into a freezer full of yummy fish and meat to smoke, grill and fry!
And don't forget to visit Local Magazine Horns and Hooks booth!

The Hills Are Alive!

Raindrops on Roses and Whiskers on Kittens, Bright copper sleigh bells and hot yellow mittens, Round paper geese that fly with a string........ these are a few of my favorite things.... or something like that.
Haven't you just been dying to tear those old curtains off the window in your kitchen (ya know, the ones with the ducks looking at each other underneath a heart) and make some flashy new dress to wear out for a night on the town? ME TOO. The musical nun/nanny in my family got all of our clothes at Lamonts.
I'm sure you've been wondering exactly when you would finally be allowed to sing along in a public setting about your favorite things and some rare German bird called Eddelwiess... or is it a tree? Regardless, now is the time!
Or maybe you've always wondered what the heck happens to that musical Austrian family because, like me, you always stop watching the movie after the nun sings Climb Every Mountain because things kind of get a little dark and sad.
Well, the sad part is still in the movie BUT it won't be so bad when you've got all dressed up and stuffing your face with buttery popcorn at the theatre this Friday and Saturday night! Come out to the 7th Street Theatre for what will surely be an entertaining evening. The movie starts at 7:30pm both nights and Saturday will also include a costume parade and the Hoquiam High School to help lead everyone in singing along. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for youth. For more info on where to get tickets or to find lyrics to all of the songs, check out the 7th Street Theatre's website.

Seafood and Music, does it get any better?
I am a self proclaimed foodie.. actually a term given to me by one of my college roomates! We were drawing names for presents for Christmas and she was discussing what kind of present would best suit us.. and I am getting way way way off track! It is this weekend that offers a great opportunity to taste the food of our shores to my hearts content.
The Sixth Annual Razor Clam Festival takes place in the Ocean Shores Convention Center in Downtown Ocean Shores. Begining at 7 AM, Saturday, March 24, 2012 with the Firemen's Pancake Breakfast and food vendors including many of our beloved harbor restaurants;
Emily's, North Shore Grill, Alec's, Home Port, and Bennett's.
Check out the entire list of vendors here
If that doesn't start your mouth to watering, how about the Clam Chowder Cookoff?
Or the specialty adult drinks at Galway Bay Irish Pub and the Pirate's Cove Pub?
I also mentioned music.. a local favorite for sure! Drumroll please!
Ericka Corban will be the featured performer throughout the day.
On top of the Scrumptious Seafood and the amazing vendors and music, attendees can bid on decorted clam shovels and kids can enjoy Uncle Stinky's Magic show and pony rides.
The Sixth Annual Razor Clam Festival ends at 4 pm. Admission to the Festival is $3.00 per person, but children 12 years old and under will be admitted free of charge!

Stuff to do with your Sweetheart
Take your Honey to Hoquiam Valentine's Day Event on February 10th and 11th at 7:30,would be my first stop on a list of places for Valentine's Day this year. Not because I am a particular Tom Hanks fan, but because if you stop at any of the participating restaurants and buy dinner for two, (no that does not mean you can go by yourself and order two entrees) or purchase flowers at participating florists, you will most definitely receive two free tickets to Sleepless in Seattle!
and now those participating restaurants...
8th street Ale House, Al’s Hum-Dinger, Casa Mia, Deidra's Deli at Farmers’ Market, El Jalapeno, Golden Dragon, Lana’s Hangar CafĂ©, Los Arcos Mexican Restaurant, The Oriole Restaurant, Welcome Inn Bar & Grill, Flowers By Pollen and Kathy’s House of Roses
If you are into dinner and dancing, celebrating the classic silver screen way might not be up your alley. However, if you want to step out in style like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers, the Sweet Heart Dinner Dance Auction might just be the ticket. The Senior class of 2012 parents are raising funds for the graduating class to enjoy a sober grad night party and we can all benefit by dancing the night away at the Aberdeen Elks, Friday February 10th at 7p.m.. Silent auctions, music by Ready or Not... sounds like a fun way to spend the evening! Grays Harbor's Chamber of Commerce has all the details.
If a low key day is more of your thing, then maybe Southshore Massage's Valentine Package would be the perfect way to spend the day. It is a couples learning package for $100.00 (not too sure what that may include but doesn't is sound very romantic?) The website, here mentions a Swedish massage!
If dinner is not in the cards, how about going to LUNCH! Bring your own wine and dine at Lunch 6:30-9:30 on Valentines Day features a great menu with live music by Erika Corban. What a great way to unwind and spend quality time with your sweetheart!
